This may be the family tomb for Paul-Gustave Hauregard (died 1883), and then again it may not. Whovever rests inside, the sculptures are exquisite.

Augustine Michel (1822-1842) division 29 Pere-Lachaise
Although so slight it might easily be overlooked, the hand coming out of stone grasping a chain is evocative, thought-provoking and engaging. The story here, like in nearly all the other stones covering the site of a burial, begs to be told.

Moliere and La Fontaine in division 25 Pere-Lachaise
Ever since the bodies were removed here in 1817, this has been and still is one of the most popular stops for the flaneur seeking to connect with French history and culture at Pere-Lachaise. Indeed, this is but one of so many graves that draws people from all over the world to Pere-Lachaise. (Although there is distinct possibility that their bones don't actually reside here, but that's a story best left to the cynics.)

Jean-Antoine Louis Théodore Gericault (1791-1824) division 12 Pere-Lachaise
One of the pioneers of the romantic school of painting in France, Theodore Gericault is perhaps most well-known for his profoundly moving "Raft of the Medusa" (see relief below). Based on one of the most disastrous shipwrecks in the 19th century, the creation of the canvas is a tale all its own and one well-told by Jonathan Smiles in his masterful The Wreck of the Medusa (2007, Atlantic Monthly Press).
Sculpture of Gericault reclining with brush in one hand and his palette in another, was created by Antoine Etex (1808-1888), who is buried in division 8 Montparnasse.

The statue is surrounded by three bronze bas-reliefs, representing his most well-known work:

For more information plus an illustration of the monument circa 1840 see Les Principeaux Monuments Funeraires du Pere-Lachaise, de Montmartre, du Mont-Parnasse et autres Cimetieres de Paris (1840) by Rousseau, Lassalle and Marty.
There seems to be a bit of confusion about this monument. As noted above, Marty et al make it clear it was erected for the victims of 1832, yet more recent sources, particularly in Valverde and Hughes "Le Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise" and in Philippe Landru's exhaustive website, the monument supposedly honors those killed in the 1848 uprising. And Bertrand Beyern writes that the monument honors those killed in 1832, 1834, 1835 and 1848.
A very small but nonetheless perplexing puzzle. . .

Shot List for some of the earliest burials in Pere-Lachaise
For no particularly clear reason (to myself at any rate), one of my main objectives for our Paris leg of this May trip is to try and locate and photograph some of the earliest known burials in Pere-Lachaise. And with Marie's help it may just prove successful. But it's a start and, if I come across at least few of those individuals lost to time, those still waiting to be found and remembered, so much the better.
The list below is a synthesis of a number of different sources, including input from Marie and Philippe, of course, and the very earliest guides to the cemetery. Most notably, the earliest print resources availble online are:
And thanks to Marie for proofing my list and suggesting additional sites as well -- so, here's my list, by division:
The list below is a synthesis of a number of different sources, including input from Marie and Philippe, of course, and the very earliest guides to the cemetery. Most notably, the earliest print resources availble online are:
